Dispute evidence

Dispute evidence is the documentation a merchant submits to contest a chargeback, such as receipts, delivery confirmation, customer correspondence and the terms accepted at purchase. It must be submitted before the card scheme’s deadline or the dispute is lost by default.

Each dispute has a reason code, and the reason code determines what evidence will actually count. Proof of delivery answers ‘item not received’ and does nothing at all for ‘fraudulent transaction’.

Deadlines are set by the card schemes, typically a matter of days rather than weeks, and they do not move.

Submitting a large volume of irrelevant material does not help. One document that directly addresses the reason code beats twenty that don’t.

Why it matters to you

Most lost disputes are lost on the deadline, not the merits. Getting the alert in front of a human quickly is worth more than any amount of paperwork.

Whatever your statement calls it, the only figure that matters is total cost divided by total takings. Our calculator works that out from your own numbers.
